The Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften (ÖAW) is the largest publicly funded research organisation in Austria and currently incorporates 29 research institutions. The Department for Europe is part of the ÖAW Institute for Oriental and European Archaeology (OREA). Our research centres on three archaeological periods: the Palaeolithic (Gravettian-period site Krems-Wachtberg), and the central European Bronze and Iron Ages. A special research focus on funerary practices bridges many of the different projects pertaining to these different time periods.
Our role in ARIADNE is to analyse and prepare datasets from our institute (central European Bronze Age cemeteries, sites and image data) and from other ÖAW institutions (e.g. numismatic database, Documenta Antiqua) for integration (WP 3, 12, 13). We will be involved in the mapping of these datasets in CIDOC-CRM and the extension of the conceptual reference model (WP14). Other tasks include collecting users’ needs and feedback, raising awareness in the Austrian archaeological community about ARIADNE and its objectives, and dissemination of project outcomes (WP 2, 4).
